Christmas Wreaths

Christmas Wreaths are a tradition that goes back many years. People used to collect together the evergreen plants that are around at Christmas, particularly those decorated with berries, like holly, and weave them into an unbroken circle. This made the wreath easy to hang as a decoration, and it avoided the appearance of too many loose ends. The creation of wreaths started in Germany centuries ago where the people used to gather the evergreen and lighted fires as a symbol of hope in the passing of winter into spring. Around the 16th century the christian peoples of Germany took up the practise of wreath making and it became a symbol during advent of their hope in the coming of Christ at Christmas.

Today, we often hang a Christmas wreath on the outside of our doors as a sign of welcome to those that visit us, although many people also hang a Christmas wreath in their hallway as a symbol of welcome into the home as well.

The variety of colours and materials that are used today to create Christmas wreaths means that there is enormous choice as to what you use as your decorations, but the symbolic use of wreaths is now very well established. We have wreaths predominantly in natural materials or man made materials made to look natural, the advantage of this being that they will not rot, and can be used year after year. We have green pine wreaths decorated with gold pine cones, wicker woven wreaths decorated with red berries, gold wreaths and so many more.
