Afternoon Tea
Afternoon Tea has been a British tradition for centuries, ever since tea was introduced to this country in the 17th century. It was actually brought here from Portugal but it is a meal still taken in many countries around hte World where Britain once had its empire.
The tradition is seeing a revival at present and it is often the celebration of choice for many special occasions. It avoids the need to eat too late in the evening and provides a wonderful relaxed atmosphere for everyone as there's really no time limit on how long it should last. For the more elderly among us it if frequently preferred to many other forms of celebration
The traditions of afternoon tea take many forme but in simple terms a good afternoon tea will include:
- a variety of freshly made sandwiches (often including egg, cucumber, and ham as key ingredients)
- Scones served with jam and clotted cream
- A selection of cakes and pastries
- Freshly brewed tea, and of course this can be of many different varieties
Making afternoon tea special does, of course, involve knowing the best way to present it, and although the crockery etc. will vary according to the location and the number of people attending, there are a few important features that should be included if possible for a special occasion tea:
- a cake stand or stands - traditionally a tiered plate so that cakes and sandwiches can be presented on a single serving dish (see our Truly Scrumptious plate stands for a beautifully decorated option)
- Doilies for any other serving plates (these are also available in the Truly Scrumptious range )
- China tea cups or mugs
- Table decorations
- a healthy appetite! - don't eat too much for lunch!
