The nature of our homes today, with central heating and almost constant dry warmth, is that the atmosphere is exactly what the natural foliage, evergreen leaves and pine cones hate, and they dry out much faster than they would have done even in houses 50 years ago. People have found in recent years that the once standard natural Christmas tree, the Spruce, is no longer suitable as the warmth of our homes means that they drop their needles very quickly. Even the now much more popular Nordman Fir which has longer, flatter needles, and holds on to them so much better, loses a lot of its freshness and tends to look dull after several days as it dries out. The same thing happens to a natural Christmas garland, where, of course, it is impossible even to extend it's life a little by watering it as one can a tree. For longevity, then, you just have to choose the products that are made to last.
It is amazing the impact you can have with just a couple of Christmas Garlands well placed. We've found that a perfect way to use them is to wind them through the bannisters on the stairs, and just tie the ends into the bottom of the bannisters. They create a truly wonderful display and if the stairs are in your entrance hall, they create a welcome to your home that it is difficult to resist
