The traditional way of making Christmas Garlands was always to take natural materials - dried foliage, pine cones, small branches of evergreen trees, berries etc. and to either use their natural colours or to paint them in bright Xmas colours, and then to weave them together with long strands of any flexible material. These can be really beautiful and of course it's very satsifying to make your own decorations if you have the time. However, it does take quite a lot of effort to gather together what you need and to put them together, and unfortunately they don't last, as the colours fade as the natural materials dry out. Preserving them from one year to the next is a skill and the storage conditions have to be absolutely right, and can be very difficult to achieve in our modern homes.
